News from our Members

Cathy Hughes is enjoying the good life in New Braunfels Texas.  She is looking forward to the new school year, when she will begin tutoring at the New Braunfels Christian Academy.  She also runs a volunteer tutor program, “OASIS”, at First Baptist Church.  In her free time, Cathy enjoys hobbies such as painting and bead-jewelry-making.  Her son, Ian, will be attending Baylor in the fall; son Ryan is 14.

Donna Fore retired in May after 30 years of service.  Col Fore most recently was Chief of Policy, Policy & Strategy Office of the Under Secretary of Defense, Intelligence at the Pentagon.

She looks forward to staying in touch with other AF Women Officers.

Cathy and her husband, Chuck, also enjoy golfing.

Cathy and Chuck were the first flying couple at KI Sawyer AFB, Michigan (in 1982).  Cathy was then a KC-135 Navigator, and her husband was a B-52 Navigator.

Cathy & Chuck recently got together with Ellen & Vic Staley, where they all reminisced about the "good-

Beverly LaFond Ph.D. officially retired from the faculty of the William Glasser Institute at the July 11-14 International Conference in Seattle. While there, her daughter, Maria, and grandson, Bobby, drove from Bozeman, MT. Waiting back at the Renaissance Hotel were friends from Malta, MT, Hoodsport, WA, and Roseburg, OR. Karen Mast will celebrate her 86th Birthday this month at her home in Flushing NY, just 9 miles north of Central Park, NYC.  Karen spends time listening to her HAM Radio.  The radio is 60 years old, and was restored a few months ago – it took them a year to complete the restoration!

Karen spoke to me on the telephone about her former life.  You may know that she earned her PhD in English in Paris France after her time in the Air Force.

Karen started her career in the Air Corps, in World War II in New Guinea, in the Office of Strategic Services (OSS).  The OSS, often considered the forerunner of the CIA, was made up of men and women drawn from diverse backgrounds ranging from debutantes to safecrackers to Yale professors to German prisoners of war.  They were secret agents, and were true unsung heroes who waged a covert war of espionage and intrigue, and made a

significant contribution to victory in World War II.

Karen’s story is told in AFWOA member Beryl Escott’s book Twentieth Century, Women of Courage, available from amazon.com.  According to Escott’s account, Karen Mast was a WW-2 combat pilot, "the only woman aviation cadet in the US Army Air Corps who flew the Mosquito Mark XVI on highly dangerous photographic and confidential reconnaissance missions over Japanese-held territory.

Wanda's Military Space-A Advice

I have been an avid user of both military lodging and air for the past ten years.  Air Force Space-A lodging is fairly simple - especially in the continental United States.  Just call toll free 1-888-AFLODGE (1-800-235-6343) and follow the prompts.  Based upon the location's availability, reservations can usually be made 24-hours prior for up to three days.  Living in San Antonio, I have been able to take advantage of the C-5's out of Lackland (formerly Kelly) AFB and traveled to Hawaii, Guam, Germany, and England.  A great WEB site is www.military.com with much information being available when searching "Space A".  Additionally, my "bibles" are the following Military Living's books available in military exchanges:  "Temporary Military Lodging Around the World", “Military Space-A Air Travel Guide" and "European Military Travel Guide plus Near East Areas".  If you run into me, ask me about my recent attempt to go Space A to Rota, Spain.  I enjoyed the trip - to England and Germany instead.  Being flexible is a must!

Memoir from Diane Ordes

A word or two on Sally Cardwell Evans:

In my younger, and important, Air Force days…there were two role models for young WAF line officers.  One was Colonel Jeanne Holm (who retired as a Major General)…and the other was Lt. Colonel Sally Cardwell Evans.  I was a young pup…company grade… had a lot of field grade officers around me…but they were gorillas!  Not Colonel Holm; and not Lt Col Evans.

Sally was bright, sharp, a fine speaker, well-informed, sensible, a piercing problem solver, and very witty.  When she was the WAF Staff Advisor at ATC, Randolph, it was a pleasure to be on an ATC base.  I was a Training Officer at OTS at Medina, and I was a Squadron Commander at Basic Training at Lackland.  When Sally visited, it was splendid to have her visit.  It was splendid to have her address my staff and/or my students/trainees.  I felt comfortable in telling her I had a problem(s).  Once, I told her I had problems with a certain regulation.  Sally told me – in a very serious tone – that regulations were written by orangutans; my job and my salary were based on my ability to work around the regulations without going to jail.  I remembered those important words the rest of my career!!!

Those two officers (Gen Holm and Col Evans) helped me grow up.   When I became a Major and above… I could stand on my own two feet (reasonably well), analyze, made decisions, articulate and motivate… and avoid jail.  As a commander, I knew orangutans wrote the regulations; my job was to work around them, and oh yes, avoid jail.  But, I picked that up from the likes of General Holm and Colonel Evans.

Anyway, I do not forget the impact Sally had on my life, and my career.  I owe my career to the people who worked for me.  I owe a lot to damn good luck.  I owe my career to good jobs and great timing.  And, I owe that to people who taught me – like MGen Jeanne Holm and Lt Col Sally Evans.

Calling All Air Force Women

All Air Force women, past and present, are invited to attend a special Air Force symposium to be held Oct. 31-Nov. 2, 2007. If you’re going to be in town for the Women’s Memorial 10th anniversary events, plan to arrive a day early to take advantage of the opportunity to participate in this special event. As part of the Air Force’s 60th Anniversary commemorative events, this symposium will honor Air Force women and celebrate their contributions to the service. The event will include one full day of activities on Oct. 31 and two half days on Nov. 1 and 2. These half-day sessions will complement, not compete with, the Women’s Memorial anniversary events, so that Air Force women may enjoy both events! Servicewomen and women veterans from any service are also invited to attend the two half-day sessions. Event details and reservation and ticket information will soon be available on an upcoming Air Force Symposium Web site. For more information, please e-mail AFIADL.CC.Workflow@maxwell.af.mil.
