From Pat’s Pen

By Pat Murphy

As we begin our final preparations for our 2006 reunion in San Antonio, April 21-23, we encourage our members to send in your reservations as soon as possible. We are looking forward to a wonderful time, including a review of a basic training parade at Lackland AFB. It will also be Fiesta time, so there will be much to see and do for those who wish to stay longer.

I want to thank Carol Habgood for all her outstanding work as the Reunion Chair and all the Board members who have responded whenever asked.

Here's an update on Lt. Col. Martha McSally, who successfully challenged the Air Force policy that required AF women to wear the Abaya (Muslim dress), while on duty in Afghanistan: She commands the 354th Fighter Squadron at Davis-Monthan AFB, AZ, and is now deployed to Bagram AB, Afghanistan. Her squadron of A-10 Thunderbolts provides close air support to U.S. and coalition forces there.

I am sorry to announce the death of Don Breedlove, husband of Norma Breedlove, one of our founders. Don was a wonderful man, who attended many of our functions. Our thoughts and prayers are with Norma.

Hope to see you at the reunion.

Pat

Reunion Update

The Reunion is fast approaching. The registration packet was sent to all members. There are two typos you may have noticed. That’s what happens when you try to update the 2003 information and don’t double check spell check.

Page 1, title: obviously it is AFWOA Conference/Reunion 2006 (not 2003).

Page 2, hospitality suite: the suite will be open during the reunion and not in November.

Most exciting about this Reunion is that it is being held the first weekend of the annual Fiesta celebration in San Antonio. Think of a more family-oriented Mardi Gras, and that’s Fiesta. It runs 10 days and has more than 100 different events. We have our own “royalty” who serve during Fiesta, too.

A schedule of Fiesta events is included with this newsletter.

So put on your dancing shoes and your party hats, and join us in April in San Antonio.

News from Our Members

Betty Ann Patterson Pope, and husband John, University Place, Washington, report that their big trip last year was a Viking river cruise from Amsterdam to Budapest with a side trip to Prague. They report it was a great trip. . .many castles on the Rhine and medieval cities, and of course Mozart concerts in Vienna/Prague.

Phyllis Dolin, Wilton, Iowa, had hip replacement surgery last March, then had a minor heart attack coming out of the anesthetic. She spent most of the year quietly recuperating. She reports she should be “out of jail” most any time. She always sends a puzzle with her annual note. This year was a challenge – took us three days to complete it. We enjoy your puzzles Phyllis.

Chris Johnson, San Antonio, Texas, is the new president of AFWOA’s South Texas Chapter. The group meets quarterly for lunch and gab. Congratulations Chris.
