August 2004

Hello Everyone!

I hope you all are having a safe, pleasant summer! It was good to see many of you at our July luncheon at the Clear Springs Café. It was especially wonderful to see Ellen Staley who is a three-time cancer survivor!! She looked great, and her positive, happy attitude was terrific to see. Many thanks to our national president, Pat Murphy, and Welda Smith for organizing that event.

You are all invited to our next luncheon arranged by Laura Jensen Currie on Friday, September 10, at Oak Hills Country Club. We can celebrate the Air Force birthday (September 18) a little early and enjoy our special camaraderie. Social time starts at 11:30 AM and the buffet lunch starts at noon.  The buffet lunch will cost $17 and you may pay with cash or check – payable to Laura – at the door. However, we need a head-count by September 8. So please call me at 698-6571 or Carol Habgood at 223-6528, if you can join us.

Also, please mark your calendars for our holiday luncheon on Saturday, December 11. It will be held at Air Force Village and more information will be sent later.

Enjoy the rest of your summer!

Best regards,

Marianne

It’s been a while since our last South Texas Group newsletter. So we’ll try to catch up on the news. The officers are:
Marianne Rogers President
– vacant – Vice President
Carol Habgood Secretary
Mary Hall Treasurer

Maj. Gen. Norma Brown Chair at WIMSA: Funds are being collected to endow a chair at WIMSA in memory of Maj. Gen. Norma Brown. So far, a total of $1,325 has been collected at WIMSA. The South Texas Group approved sending $1,000 to WIMSA for the chair. In addition, the AFWOA national board approved sending $2,500. That leaves $5,175 needed to fully fund the chair. If you’re interested in donating, please send a check, made out to AFWOA – with the note it’s for the Norma Brown chair – to Carol Habgood, 319 Wickes Street, San Antonio TX 78210-1247. She will see that it gets to the treasurer and that the funds are consolidated and sent to WIMSA. Hopefully, AFWOA will be able to be the sponsor of the chair.

Col. Dana Born (nominated for Brigadier General) is the new dean of faculty at the Air Force Academy. She’s a 1983 graduate of the USAFA, and is the first woman to oversee instruction there.

Beware of new car-jacking scheme: Everyone is vigilant when shopping in malls. But what happens when you get to your car, get in and are all ready to pull out when you see a piece of paper stuck to your rear window? The instinct is to shift into park, get out and remove the paper. But that is when would-be car-jackers appear out of nowhere, jump into your car and take off, usually with your purse still in the car. Now the car-jackers have your wallet, ID, credit cards, and your house keys. The best thing to do is drive away and remove the piece of paper later.

Norma Breedlove is collecting all greeting cards for a worthy cause. So before you toss those cards, please give them to Norma. All donations are appreciated.

Carol Habgood is the president of the San Antonio Women’s Federation for 2004-2006. She also is National Vice President of the Women’s Overseas Service League, as well as being active in AFWOA. She reports that being retired affords her the luxury of being active in such wonderful organizations.

Chris Johnson left Rome (N.Y., that is) last year and moved to Air Force Village 1.  Bridget Duggan has also joined our local group after moving to Air Force Village 1 from Springfield, Va.

Anna Rivers is the manager of Business Planning for Northrop Grumman Corporation, Information Technology.

Patsy Hughes is doing well and recovering nicely at home from her hip replacement surgery.
